This Saturday we are joined by Kai D’Argenta who is joining us to talk about ‘Peter Would Cry Over You – Modern TV Werewolves and Masculinity’.
The talk covers depictions of werewolves in various ensemble supernatural tv shows from the early 21st century, focussing specifically on male characters. I look at how gender identity and sexuality are portrayed, and at hinted at and explicit queerness. I’ll look briefly at the Hays code, queerbaiting as a concept, and some of the differences between how lycanthropy is handled in tv series as a long form media compared to movie explorations. I also cover the common tropes that tend to be used to separate werewolf characterisation from human and vampire characterisation (class, race, ‘nature’/’civilization’) and we will also look at ‘subverted Karpman drama triangles’ (where conventionally gendered conflict roles are interchanged in ways that queer characters).
