Sign up here

Gothic literature loves a good dramatic mountain, cliff or crag, so what is it that makes the rocky stuff irresistible to writers? We love the atmospheric creepiness of an isolated chasm, or a sheer wall of rock swept by rain or snow, but we don’t ever think much about what makes mountains gothic, beyond the weather or the presence of something with sharp teeth. This talk will focus on mountains as an example of how geology is inherently gothic, using 2 popular texts and a podcast to give examples of the ways in which geological time is the perfect frame for things which are deep, dark and unknowable

This started off as a story blog to share the little fictions that I like to write but it's turned into something a bit more Goth! I'm Dr Sam Hirst and I research the Gothic, theology and romance and at the moment I'm doing free Gothic classes online! We also have readalongs, watchalongs and reading groups. And I post fun little Gothic bits when I have the chance. Find me on twitter @RomGothSam
