Upcoming Courses with Dr Sam Hirst

I have a number of upcoming courses running in different places on a range of topics. Have a look below and see if anything catches your fancy. I’d love to see you there!

Also, let me know in the comments what you’d like me to run a course or a workshop on!

Transformations of the Gothic, 1831-2026 (Online)

This ten-week course at the University of Liverpool starts on May 6th. Classes run every week online at 6pm. You get loads of materials on top of the live class, including a video lecture and recommended articles or stories (depending on what you’d most like to explore if you have the time)

You can find out more about the course, including the reading list HERE.

The course is £155 or £80 for concessions. You can join from anywhere and there are no entry requirements. Come join us!

Ghost Tales from the Medieval to the Modern Day (Liverpool)

This course is an in-person workshop at the University of Liverpool on Saturday 9th May from 10am – 4pm.

Split into four sessions, we’ll be exploring a range of stories from the Medieval period, the Victorian rise of the Ghost story, the Weird Tale and the modern ghost-story (looking at a variety of national traditions!). A reading pack will be provided.

The course is £55

‘Oh Ever Loving, Lovely and Beloved’: Byron’s Early Queer Writing (Online Workshop)

I’ll be running this online workshop with Romancing the Gothic twice: on 16th (7-10pm BST) and 19th April (3-6pm BST)

We’ll be exploring the practice of piecing together queer histories using Byron as a case study. We’ll be reading his early letters and poetry, discussing the themes of queer love and loss that he explores.

A reading pack will be provided.

The class is £15 or £10 concessions (self-identified)

The Brontë Juvenilia (online with the Brontë Parsonage)

From May 5th, I’ll be running an online 5 week course exploring the worlds of the Brontë Juvenilia. If you’ve heard of it but have never dived in and don’t know where to start, this is the course for you!

The course costs £150

12 Books A Regency Heroine Should Read (Online)

I’m running this course on women’s writing in the 18th and early 19th century with the Regency Academe All Year! You can book on any time until August and get access to all the materials provided for the whole year!

Each month we read a different book by a woman writer in the 18th and early 19th century. I provide a short talk, reading materials and questions and you have the option to join a live class on the last Friday or Sunday of the month (usually).

The course only costs $55 (which is, quite frankly, an absolute STEAL!)

This started off as a story blog to share the little fictions that I like to write but it's turned into something a bit more Goth! I'm Dr Sam Hirst and I research the Gothic, theology and romance and at the moment I'm doing free Gothic classes online! We also have readalongs, watchalongs and reading groups. And I post fun little Gothic bits when I have the chance. Find me on twitter @RomGothSam
