What is Romancing the Gothic?

Romancing the Gothic started (and is continuing) in the lock down. I started by offering a single free class and it went from there.

What’s the idea?

The idea is to share scholarship, discussion and the joy of Gothic and romance literature together.

How does it work?

We have Saturday lectures which are two hours long. They’re held on zoom and they’re usually at 10 am and 7 pm (London Time). If you’re interested you can fill out the google form (see homepage for link). We are also starting some shorter more in depth groups on a Sunday for one hour. They’re usually at 10 am and 7 pm but it depends on which timezone the speaker is from!

What are the book groups?

There are two book group sessions on a Thursday. They’re at 10.30 am and 7 pm (London Time). We alternate between ‘modern’ and ‘classic’ texts and try to support indie publishers and self-published works as well as a range of texts both old and new. We often have author visits for the modern weeks.

If you’re worried about participating or it feels a bit daunting, don’t worry! You’re welcome to attend with your video and mic off and just soak it in!

What are the watch-alongs?

These are a bit of light fun. We have a twitter chat group and watch fun, silly or shocking Gothic films together. Contact me at @RomGothSam to join us!

Are you the only teacher?

I have been so far! But no longer! Excitingly, we’ll be having lots of guest classes going forward with experts sharing their experience and knowledge from all over the world. If you’re interested in contributing, do contact me!

This started off as a story blog to share the little fictions that I like to write but it's turned into something a bit more Goth! I'm Dr Sam Hirst and I research the Gothic, theology and romance and at the moment I'm doing free Gothic classes online! We also have readalongs, watchalongs and reading groups. And I post fun little Gothic bits when I have the chance. Find me on twitter @RomGothSam
