Hello all!
I’m looking for classes and lectures for the second half of 2021. I’m taking a hiatus in June for one month and then we’re back with a whole new programme of classes. Maybe YOU could be one of them! You’ll be presenting to an international group from all over the world! We value expertise of all kinds so don’t be put off.
Do you want to share your work with others? Take part in an international project? Get some teaching or presenting practice? Build up your CV? Get back in the academic saddle or present your ideas to a wider audience? There’s even a little bit of money involved. We survive entirely on donations but there’s a kitty to provide a small fee for speakers and we encourage donations to individual speakers.
Give a Talk with Us – The Options
We want speakers from all stages of their academic career and from other fields. Expertise obviously doesn’t just live in the academy! There are three options:)
- Creative workshops in our monthly Days of Creation (1 hr – writing, art, fashion, film…)
- 2 x the same 1 hr concentrated classes on Sundays (focused on a text, author or very specific area). This option is also perfect if you’re building confidence or have less experience (or you just want to concentrate your talk!)
- 3. 2 x 2hr talk on a Saturday (general overview, in depth wide study, interactive class)
These are classes which include a talk in one or more sections, discussion and the chance for questions. I run the zoom room (fear not!) and I offer support in advance with whatever you need as well as doing pre-class tech checks.
Sending a Pitch
Please send a title and a brief summary (100-300 words – this is a guide, don’t worry if you’re under or over) of your proposed talk or workshop to sam@romancingthegothic.com
Topic Options
We’ve had a lot of specific topics requested (listed below) but we’re interested in any of your work that stands someone in the vague vicinity of the Gothic/Horror/Dark folklore/the Demonic. Check out our timetables for examples of previous classes or contact me if you’re not sure whether your talk is Goth enough (it will be!)

Different forms of supernatural creatures and belief
Horror film and writing
Different national traditions
Different creatures or archetypes – witches, demons, werewolves, ghosts, mermaids…
Different intersections between religion and horror
The Gothic of different time periods – we’re interested in anything from the Early Modern (pre-Gothic) to the current day
Different theoretical frameworks – ecogothic, queer gothic, medical humanities …
Specific authors, directors, artists
Interdisciplinary work
Death cultures
Histories of specific locations (from cities to houses)
Intersections with other genres – Neo-Victorian, Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy etc.
Pitch me anything in some related to the Gothic, the dark, the Horrifying, the disturbing, the fantastical…
